Chief Imagination Officer: Living Maths

“I am the Chief Imagination Officer of an Educational NGO in South Africa called Living Maths. I teach approximately 4500 students weekly in schools around Cape Town and now recently, the world. I am passionate about sharing knowledge and empowering young people. I am also a multi-award purchasing educator and was voted third best-looking educational innovator by my Mom. I feel that it is my destiny to spread the joy of thinking to anyone who is willing to listen and even to those who are not. I know Karate, Ju-jitsu and 2 other Japanese words.”

Why do you want to be part of UCT Upstarts?
“Poking a bear is not the only way to get a reaction.”

How would you ‘Re-educate Education’?
“Education should not be about testing. Education should be about learning. Too much emphasis on assessments and results diminishes the purpose of learning. I would love to see more schools following the NO homework policy, Flipped classrooms and blended learning. Students need to look forward to education for the intellectual challenge and to quench their thirst for knowledge. The paradigm of schools is already changing – Online courses, virtual teachers and digital content are fast becoming the norm. Are we providing our children with the requisite set of tools to cope in an ever changing world? I firmly believe that Re-educating education is going to involve changing mindsets and traditional approaches. Systems and policies need to be prepared for these changes. A revolution in education is on its way and it is travelling along the Internet Super Highway. Brace yourselves for a fabulous adventure.”
